This 6 String banjo has a wonderful voice! The Cocobolo Rosewood tone ring on a Mahogany rim with the Fiberskyn head gives it a wonderfully balanced tone. The Rim, Neck and Rim Cap are all Mahogany and the rim features a Herringbone inlay! <br /> <br /> S6 Front<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Front.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Front.png','Zoom','height=665,width=316,top=200,left=689.5,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:149 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="301" height="650" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Front.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> S6 Side View<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Side.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Side.png','Zoom','height=665,width=267,top=200,left=714,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:150 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="252" height="650" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Side.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> S6 Back<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Back.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Back.png','Zoom','height=665,width=308,top=200,left=693.5,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:151 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="293" height="650" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Back.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> S6 Pot Close up<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Pot.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Pot.png','Zoom','height=665,width=448,top=200,left=623.5,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:152 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="433" height="650" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S6Prototype/S6_P_Pot.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> I can't wait for Pat &amp; Patrick to get this in there hands! I am planning on making this type of banjo a standard offering at Buzzard Mountain. It should retail for about $800 and be about the best banjo available in that price range. It will have the following features:<br /> - 2 Ply Hard Maple Rim<br /> - Bubinga Wood Tone Ring<br /> - Bubinga Rim Overlay<br /> - Standard square headstock profile with Rosewood overlay (The custom I am currently working on has a upgraded headstock profile)<br /> - Rosewood finger board<br /> - White Side dots<br /> - Grooved Tension hoop with 14 brackets &amp; shoes<br /> - Fyberskin, Amber or Frosted head. <br /> - Dobson style heel<br /> - Bone nut &amp; 5th Pip<br /> - Planetary tuners with ebony knobs<br /> <br /> Here are a couple of photos of the custom version I am working on now:<br /> <br /> Here is the rim, it has been turned and the holes are drilled and it just needs to be sanded and finished.<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/BM09-003/BM09003-C1.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/BM09-003/BM09003-C1.png','Zoom','height=498,width=665,top=283.5,left=515,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:143 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="650" height="483" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/BM09-003/BM09003-C1.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> Here is the neck blank in my jig getting the finger board glued on.<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/BM09-003/BM09003-C2.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/BM09-003/BM09003-C2.png','Zoom','height=342,width=665,top=361.5,left=515,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:144 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="650" height="327" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/BM09-003/BM09003-C2.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> This banjo is turning out great! Some of you should remember that during shipping it got damaged. <br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/Damaged_S1_01.JPG' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/Damaged_S1_01.JPG','Zoom','height=240,width=415,top=262.5,left=490,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:128 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="400" height="265" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/Damaged_S1_01.JPG" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> So with the damage we took this opportunity to rework the banjo. Patrick wanted it to have the S2 headstock design instead of the traditional Vega headstock, and it is stained maple vs. walnut. This build has turned out great! I also had the opportunity to take this banjo to my Tuesday Night Jam and play it for a bit, and it sounds great and has no problem at all cutting through the noise of the bluegrass banjos in attendance.<br /> <br /> Here are a few images to torture Patrick some, because he still wont have it in is hands until next week at the Folk Musicians Retreat.<br /> <br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/S1-Patrick-01.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/S1-Patrick-01.png','Zoom','height=665,width=289,top=200,left=703,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:129 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="274" height="650" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/S1-Patrick-01.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/S1-Patrick-02.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/S1-Patrick-02.png','Zoom','height=665,width=448,top=200,left=623.5,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:130 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="433" height="650" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/S1-Patrick-02.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/S1-Patrick-03.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/S1-Patrick-03.png','Zoom','height=665,width=291,top=200,left=702,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:131 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="276" height="650" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S1_Patrick/S1-Patrick-03.png" alt="" /></a> Thu, 16 Apr 2009 18:21:06 -0400 http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/archives/29-guid.html http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/banjo banjo building repair & conversion somerset banjos Introducing the Somerset S3-002! http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/archives/25-Introducing-the-Somerset-S3-002!.html Banjo Building http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/archives/25-Introducing-the-Somerset-S3-002!.html#comments http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/wfwcomment.php?cid=25 0 http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/rss.php?version=2.0&type=comments&cid=25 nospam@example.com (Neil Turner) Well folks the <a href="http://somersetbanjo.com/s-3.html" target="_blank">S3</a>-002 is done and on its way to Pat &amp; Patrick for their inspection and final setup. This jig is attached to my drill press and helps insure that all the holes are perpendicular and in line.<br /> <br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/Rim_Jig01.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/Rim_Jig01.png','Zoom','height=665,width=503,top=200,left=596,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:93 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="83" height="110" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/Rim_Jig01._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/Rim_Jig02.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/Rim_Jig02.png','Zoom','height=665,width=503,top=200,left=596,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:94 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="83" height="110" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/Rim_Jig02._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> Here is a shot of the finished rim before the hardware had been installed:<br /> <br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S7Prototype/S7P-06.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/S7Prototype/S7P-06.png','Zoom','height=573,width=665,top=246,left=515,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:100 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="109" height="94" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S7Prototype/S7P-06._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> This is the neck and rim together, the neck just needs a few more coats of finish and the rim is done!<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S7Prototype/S7P-07.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/S7Prototype/S7P-07.png','Zoom','height=426,width=665,top=319.5,left=515,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:101 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="70" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S7Prototype/S7P-07._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S7Prototype/S7P-08.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/S7Prototype/S7P-08.png','Zoom','height=355,width=665,top=355,left=515,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:102 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="58" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/S7Prototype/S7P-08._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> Next, I've been finishing up the <a href="http://somersetbanjo.com/s-3.html" target="_blank">S3-002</a> for a lucky customer. This step takes me about an hour to complete, but the video is compressed to about 5 mins. Using a series of wood rasps and files I can grind down the ridges left by the Copy carver and finalize the shape, this hand work allows me the ability to make adjustments where necessary for each individual piece of wood. It would be possible to get the neck to this point on the Copy Carver using a series of smaller router bits and burrs but I prefer to do this by hand. <br /> <br /> <br /> Background music "Dreadful Wind and Rain" Jerry Garcia &amp; David Grisman from their Shady Grove album.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="serendipity_imageComment_center" style="width: 550px"><div class="serendipity_imageComment_img"><a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-11.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-11.png','Zoom','height=277,width=565,top=394,left=565,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:23 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="550" height="262" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-11.png" alt="" /></a></div><div class="serendipity_imageComment_txt">Before Image</div></div><br /> <br /> <div class="serendipity_imageComment_center" style="width: 550px"><div class="serendipity_imageComment_img"><a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-14.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-14.png','Zoom','height=748,width=565,top=158.5,left=565,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:26 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="550" height="733" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-14.png" alt="" /></a></div><div class="serendipity_imageComment_txt">After Image</div></div><br /> <br /> On my custom banjos I generally skip the Copy Carver step and just carve the neck by hand. I do this mainly because I enjoy it and it does give me a bit more control over the finished product since I am generally only making one at a time, whereas on the Somersets I am typically doing several necks at once. I was going to take my camera with me and get some shots of the yard, but I forgot to grab it on my way out. Next time, I'll remember. <br /> <br /> I picked up a 16/4 x 9" x 8' hard maple for the somerset necks. This thing is huge!<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/Lumberyard1.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/Lumberyard1.png','Zoom','height=426,width=565,top=319.5,left=565,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:57 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="550" height="411" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/Lumberyard1.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> The big purple truck belongs to my dad, I call it the Magenta Beast.<br /> <br /> The log on top of the hard maple is a really nice piece of curly maple I picked up for making some of my own custom banjos. Today was one of those days and I got there just at the wrong time and ended up having to wait for 45 mins or so. The guys that work there are really good about trying to help a fella out and are always apologetic when it takes so long, so I can't complain too much. While waiting this time I got into a really interesting conversation with a guy who builds boxes and humidors. Ed Sallee was his name and you can see some of his work at his site <a href="http://www.waxingmoonwood.com" target="_blank">www.waxingmoonwood.com</a>. It's always nice to talk to someone else who is passionate about the beauty of wood! The templates are just guides that help me maintain consistency with the necks, however each piece of wood is different and must be adjusted accordingly.<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-16.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-16.png','Zoom','height=748,width=565,top=33.5,left=365,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:28 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="83" height="110" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-16._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-17.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-17.png','Zoom','height=428,width=565,top=193.5,left=365,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:29 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="83" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-17._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> The neck is now ready to glue up the overlays for the headstock and heel. A little bit of PVA wood glue and some clamping will do the job. The glue I use only needs to be clamped for about 30 mins, but I usually leave it clamped up overnight just to be safe. On the heel I use blue painters tape as it doesn't require a great deal of pressure to set correctly. It might be important to note that you do not want to clamp things to tight as this will "Starve" the joint and the glue will not set properly.<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-18.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-18.png','Zoom','height=428,width=565,top=193.5,left=365,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:30 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="83" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-18._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-19.png' onclick="F1 = window.open('/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-19.png','Zoom','height=428,width=565,top=193.5,left=365,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,resize=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=yes'); return false;"><!-- s9ymdb:31 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="83" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-19._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> That's all for now folks! Using the jointer to make sure these surfaces are dead flat and at the correct angle to each other.<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-07.png'><!-- s9ymdb:17 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="51" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-07._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> Now that the top is flat and perpendicular to the sides, I run the blank through the table saw to cut the groove that will hold the truss rod. Make sure you run it through in both directions to insure that the groove is centered! Then I take the blank to my oscillating spindle sander and true up the back side of the headstock, the rest of the back is still over sized but I will take care of this later. I also draw in the fret board shape with my templates at this time to prepare for the next step.<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-08.png'><!-- s9ymdb:18 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="64" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-08._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> Now I take the blanks back to the band saw and cut off the excess, being careful to stay +1/16 or so outside the lines. This gives me a rough blank that is starting to look like a neck!<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-09.png'><!-- s9ymdb:19 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="64" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-09._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> Thats it for now, stay tunned for the next episode of "The Making of a Somerset"! Will neck blank #1 finally find true love? Will neck blank #5 tell the group it's big secret? Will neck blank #2 be kicked out of the shop? You'll just have to tune in next time to find out!<br /> Thu, 22 Jan 2009 18:53:32 -0500 http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/archives/7-guid.html http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/banjo banjo building somerset banjos The Making of a Somerset - Part 1 http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/archives/6-The-Making-of-a-Somerset-Part-1.html http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/archives/6-The-Making-of-a-Somerset-Part-1.html#comments http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/wfwcomment.php?cid=6 0 http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/rss.php?version=2.0&type=comments&cid=6 nospam@example.com (Neil Turner) I thought I would document the building process I use for making the <a href="http://somersetbanjo.com/index.htm" target="_blank">Somerset necks</a> with this next batch I am currently working on. I will do this as I progress over the next week or so. The process I use is a combination of experience, research and trial and error, if you are looking to build your own necks you should be able to use many of my techniques, however some are specific to doing multiple necks at a time.<br /> <br /> <strong>Part 1</strong><br /> I start with a large piece of wood, for this group it is a section of a <a href="http://www.ufei.org/urbanwood/grades.html" target="_blank">FAS quality</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_maple" target="_blank">Hard Maple</a> board that was 16/4s (4 inches) by 11 inches by 8 feet long which I cut down into thirds. These are rough sawn boards that have been air tried a minimum on 2 years.<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-01.png'><!-- s9ymdb:11 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="78" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-01._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> I take this beast and run it through my thickness planer and jointer to square up the edges and expose the grain.<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-02.png'><!-- s9ymdb:12 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="69" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-02._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-06.png'><!-- s9ymdb:16 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="109" height="59" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-06._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> I then cut the log down to a manageable size and remove the excess depth. I usually purchase 12/4 (3 inch) stock, but the last time I went to my hardwood supplier all they had was the thicker 16/4 (4 inch) stock. <br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-03.png'><!-- s9ymdb:13 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="74" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-03._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> Once I can see the grain I can begin to layout how many necks I can get out of it, being careful to avoid any imperfections in the wood. I use a laser cut acrylic template I had made specifically to my design for the Somerset necks. If you are making a neck yourself, you will want to use a template. Prior to having the acrylic templates I used a print out pasted to a piece of hardboard and then cut to size, this method works just fine for one off design, but consistency is important in a production model.<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-04.png'><!-- s9ymdb:14 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="109" height="51" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-04._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> Next, I run these blanks through the band saw being careful to stay 1/8 inch or so outside of my lines. This allows me a little wiggle room as I move forward.<br /> <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-05.png'><!-- s9ymdb:15 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="110" height="45" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-05._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-06.png'><!-- s9ymdb:16 --><img class="serendipity_image_center" width="109" height="59" style="border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;" src="http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/uploads/blogimages/SomersetNecks/SN-06._Thumb.png" alt="" /></a><br /> <br /> This process leaves me with a rough blank.<br /> <br /> <br /> If you are interested in carving your own neck and would like a blank at this stage just contact me for a price.<br /> <br /> <br /> Mon, 19 Jan 2009 17:55:35 -0500 http://www.buzzardmountain.com/blog/archives/6-guid.html http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/banjo building somerset banjos
